Thai were the people who introduced the fruit carving or fruit slicing art in theworld back in the 14th century. The first kratong was offered to the
Goddess of the water by the founder of Sukhothai, King Ramkhamhaeng. It was
turned into a festival and being celebrated every year in November. The king was so happy with the creation and
decided to teach fruit carving as an art heritage in the royal palace. The
teaching was kept secret and it was limited to royal palace only.
The
art is known as Kae SA Lak in Thai society. Now the fruit slicing is so famous
in the world and being taught in the different countries of the world as a
professional course. There are two major types of fruit carving: Skin Carving
and Three Dimension Carving. The skin carving is used where centre of the fruit
is different from its skin and it is carve until the difference is removed and
designer gets its desired shape. On the other hand, the three dimension carving
is used to make different shapes like flowers, leaves etc.
